PE crashes continually when working with motion text.

When trying to add a motion text overlay, PE freezes up, at some point during the process. Every. Single. Time. I'm saving my file continually, and it's taking forever just to add motion text overlays to a 2 min. church announcement video. Is anyone else experiencing the same issue?

I tried chatting with Adobe support, but after being left hanging for 20 min with no interaction from the support desk, I gave up!

I'm running PE 2018 Version 16 on a Mac with High Sierra.
