pe 2022, win10

editing and applying transitions, and all of a sudden I have a black cursor over a white cursor with a no glyph below it.

I can do nothing.

escape does not help. suggestions?
there is about an hour of work, and apparently save is no longer a choice

    Reboot your computer and then restart PrE.  If the project doesn't open, open the most recently saved auto backup.

    what does that symbol indicate?
