PE22 - Work in 3:2 Aspect Ratio?

I routinely need to do simple edits on zoom recordings. Zoom produces a 2736x1824 3:2 mp4 avc file which PE2022 easily opens, but I get black vertical bars on the right and left. (Yes I can zoom to eliminate the bars, but then I lose top and bottom content.) I have looked at all the mp4 project presets and none seem to accomodate 3:2 video. Can a 3:2 project preset be added? Some Other workaround?

The 2nd problem is that PE22 automatically uses a 3840x1920 project preset for this video. That's just more resolution than needed, and everything needs conversion to that standard, leading to way slow performance. (I can manually select a project, and use the force selected project to this present check box, to work on these files in a 1920x1080 world, but it would be nice to work at the actual clip's resolution?

Similarly, I don't see a standard way to export 3:2. I was able to make a 1920x1280 (3:2) custom export/sharing preset, but that adds black bars at the top and bottom.

It's important to me to be able to edit zoom recordings at their native aspect ratio (and preferably their native resolution).

If your question is, Can a custom aspect ratio be created by the user? The answer is no.

In version 2022, Adobe added a number of project settings, including square and upright. But you can't custom-create one to fit your video.

Thank you, Steve. Appreciate the quick response and the information.

Was it you, Steve, who had the video about how to change project settings for earlier versions of PE? I was previously a PE13 user, and once or twice customized my project presets using your advice. I stepped up a few weeks ago to PE2022 to get the 4K capability, which I occasionally need. I realize the Adobe needs to put some distance between their budget offering and their pricey one, but it's strange that an important feature like customizing the aspect ratio would get left behind. I realize that's not a question for you, but perhaps someone at Adobe will notice this thread.

And perhaps someone at Adobe has chanced to try Zoom? Very handy tool, especially in a pandemic. There are literally millions of hours a day of zoom recordings being made, and most would benefit from some minor tweaks, like edits, captions, and titles, tasks for which PE2022 would be highly suitable, if it could actually work with Zoom recordings at their proper aspect ratio.

For me, Zoom is my major source of video for editing, and not being able to edit it in it's native resolution and aspect ratio with PE2022 means I need a different video editor.  I'm not happy about that, because I've paid twice for PE and because I like it, and because I don't really want to learn a new system.

Kaare,

You are right, you should be editing your Zoom recordings quickly and efficiently.   My experience with PrE 2021 and 2022 is that it works fine.

Thankfully I've avoided Zoom meetings for a month or so, but when I've used the Zoom recording feature it saved in a 16:9 ratio.   You say that Zoom produces a 2736x1824 3:2 mp4.  That confuses me.  How did you get it to do that?

I tried a quick one again today to verify for this post.    On my Windows 10 computer, Zoom again saved the video at 1280x720.   Using the automatic new project feature in PrE 2021, it establishes 1280x720 settings.     There is a check box in the Zoom video settings to optimize for third party editors.   I have that checked, but don't know what it actually does.   The 1280x720 is a 16:9 ratio.   For me, that is perfect match for sharing on any current computer or TV screen.

You didn't need to upgrade to 2022 for 4K video.  That's been there for a few versions.  I've used PrE for 4K editing since about 2017, or 2018 when I got my first 4K capable camera.  There are some good additions to this year's version.

There are a few that have created instructions on how to make your own project settings presets.   If you need to do that, this YouTube tutorial should work as well as any:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mdZ2ifk7OI

Good luck with your video projects!
