Question

Playback pausing while editing

Yes, I looked on these forums and saw similar issues but none of the solutions work for me.

I have been having this issue for a while. Sometimes it works fine and plays back smoothly, sometimes it pauses ever second during playback.

Moving clips to same SSD didn't work. I've even doing a project with a single file as to not mix formats and settings and its having the same issue.

Disabling hardware rendering did not work.

Changing Audio hardware did nothing.

I have a duel monitor setup, I've tried single monitor. Still nothing.

I'm guessing its the issue with something stealing priority from the application, but I have shut everything down and it still does not work.

I just downloaded and installed this app not 2 months ago, it should be up to date. I would like to keep using it but If I can't I need to find a different app.

Please help.

I'm experiencing exactly the same problem with PE 14, PE 2020 and I even went back to PE 12 and the problem is the same.   I'll play the timeline for editing and the image suddenly stops.   It only restarts if I hit the space bar or play button to remove it from pause.

I'll try some of the solutions mentione and report back.   I thought I'd probably be the only one experiencing the problem so some hardware in my computer was probably failing.

mikea90095116,

I turned off the bluetooth on my computer, and started experiencing the same probably as you. Then I turned the bluetooth back on and the problem was solved. I'm not sure why, but bluetooth needs to be on or my adobe premiere elements 2021's playback keeps pausing.

I didn't say that any app that phones home will stop playback.

Any process that takes dominance -- even momentarily -- will stop playback. This is not a bug in the program. It's the program's design and so will not be 'fixed'. The program will only play your video if it is not interrupted by another program.

Well the bug comes in when nothing is running but still interrupts the program. This makes the app on usable. How is this a useful feature when it's interrupting playback as I'm trying to edit video? The bug comes in because that so-called "feature" is obviously not working correctly.

Looking at the video I posted I can't tell what process could be interrupting Adobe, unless you can, but I don't see it.

Any other ideas?

Mike,

One of the hardest parts of trying to help people via a forum is convincing them that there is an anomaly or weakness within their system.

The logic is that Premiere Elements is a mass market product with thousands of customers.  The market is big enough that some can earn good money buy writing and publishing guide books!  In other words, the software is a "constant".   So when an anomaly shows up on one system, it is not a universal "bug".   If it was universal, nobody could run it. The consumer's computer is the variable.

That said, as a new customer with a current version you have access to Adobe's "chat" support system.  They may be able to run your computer remotely and find the anomaly.

I'd sort by CPU usage.

Play your Premiere Elements timeline. Premiere Elements should be at the top of the list. Watch what jumps to the top of the CPU list, causing Premiere Elements to stop.

You say you're using Windows Defender and no other antivirus -- but antivirus software is a good candidate. Note that some software sneaks antivirus software onto your computer, so watch for that. But it could be anything from some "helpful" software installed by your computer's manufacturer to a some background process that snuck onto your computer and is regularly phoning home.

Well I came back from a meeting to capture the issue but everything is working. I have done nothing. The computer is still running all my weird BS in the background but it's working fine. I have no idea what is going with this damn program. If it happens again I'll record the task manager and try and find out what the hell is running that causes the program to stop. But as of now for some reason things work.

That means that a background process is interrupting.

Open your Task Manager and play the timeline. If you watch the processes, you can sometimes spot which one is jumping into the foreground, which stops Premiere Elements playback.

Okay, when I do this I can't tell what to look for. Should I sort it under CPU, Memory, or Disk? Also, I know you said look in "Processes", but I don't' see much moving on top of Adobe when I play it. Should I look in the details tab? Playback only lasts a second so I'm not sure if the refresh time in Task Manager is fast enough to catch it on either tab. I've set the update speed to the highest setting just in case.

Thinking about recording my screen while I'm doing this in case I'm missing it. Just having the "Processes" tab sorted under CPU a bunch of things are moving around even when I'm idle, or just typing this reply, but like I said I don't see much moving over Adobe. Once you tell me what to look for I'll record my screen when I get the chance and link the video here.

By "pause" do you mean that the playback hesitates for a moment or two and then plays -- or do you mean that it plays for a second or two and then stops and doesn't play again?

There are very different causes for these very different symptoms.

Totally stops. I have to keep hitting play.
