Premier Elements 2020 Keeps Freezing

Just wondered if anyone can help. I've recently upgraded to Premier Elements 2020 and am having real problems with it. It keeps freezing, or goes unresponsive although it eventually recovers. This happened a lot when I got close to finishing my last video but it's doing the same thing now on a new video that has only 1 minute of content. I'm using Expert Edit and 4k files. Could it be because I'm saving the video down to my SSD drive? No system resource issues to speak of. I've recently installed a 1TB Samsung 860 EVO SSD, and have a chunky spec ASUS Core i7 ROG laptop with 16GB Ram.

Any help or suggestions would be massively appreciated!

"Adobe Premiere Elements 2020's performance is absolutely abysmal!  ... The product is clearly not ready for release..... but this is what Adobe's amateur developers and architects foist on Adobe's user base. "

My experience is the exact opposite.  Premiere Elements is on version 18.  I started with version 9.  It has been very reliable on a series of four different windows laptops.  I have a workflow that puts all the source, project, scratch and output files in project specific folders on an SSD.  I've been editing 4K with the last three versions.   With the virus lockdown I'm spending time learning Premiere Pro.  I'm finding Premiere Elements has several advantages, including a level of "simplicity".

Without knowing more, my first guess is that you have an audio hardware problem.  There have been posts here where the Audio Hardware settings go wrong, perhaps due to Windows updates.  Try setting them to something different or to "None".    It seems that PrE and your computer can get bogged down on wrong audio and will bring the entire process to a halt.  Another choice might be to try changes to the preview preferences in the General preferences tab.   Or do both.

In fact, having a DISABLED microphone, for example, can cause the issues I above noted.  But disabling the microphone in Windows 10 is actually the ONLY way to mute the microphone successfully on many Windows 10 systems, as the Mute checkboxes and controls do NOT function properly on many Windows 10 installations.  But regardless, for Adobe Premiere Elements 2020 to behave so poorly due to ANY sound configuration issue on the host OS is UNACCEPTABLE, and indicative of amature programmers' work.  Premiere Elements should be able to handle such situations gracefully, and if anything, simply notify the user that the sound hardware (e.g., the microphone) is unavailable (e.g., disabled) or not properly configured for use.  That is how professional developers / architects would handle things in the applicatoin.  But these days, that seems to be too much for Adobe's folks.  That's a shame, and very amateurish.  Indeed, Adobe's QA folks should likewise have caught and forced such issues to be addressed, prior to releasing the product to untold hapless users, wasting the latter's time and providing a product to them that seems / is unstable and not ready for "prime time."

Adobe Premiere Elements 2020's performance is absolutely abysmal!  It constantly freezes to the point where it must be terminated, and is a complete pain as a consequence to try to work with it.  The product is clearly not ready for release, even with the February 2020 update, but this is what Adobe's amateur developers and architects foist on Adobe's user base.  I recommend looking for an alternative product until Adobe get's its development act together.  This is really, IMO, unforgiveable: Adobe should know better than to put out such beta stuff in a release.  In fact, such freezes easily manifest and are easy to reproduce: just try switching back and forth between Export mode and one of the other modes a few times, on an average computer system: pretty quickly you'll find the product freezing.  Adobe's GUI is itself the problem.

"....because you should ideally have your project files on a different disk to where your operating system is saved? "

On a previous computer I reserved a 50 gig space on my SSD C:\ drive for short, one at at time video projects.  Now I have a newer computer with twice the SSD space, so I'm not limited so much.

My experience is that, as long as there is plenty of spare space, an SSD drive for the project, source files and scratch files significantly improves performance.  But, there has to be plenty of spare space!

That is interesting, because it didn't work for me though, and I have a new Samsung EVO 1TB SSD drive, and some pretty meaty specs on the laptop. Core i7, 16GB RAM.

"However, it is still hanging up/freezing during some tasks (NOT a 4k video), like when I had 4 titles stacked/4 video lines open"

Are you getting a yellow/orange line above the complex areas?  Are you using the "Render" (preview) button?

yes, after the 'freeze' and re-open, I rendered it, and it didn't hang up again.  thank you

Phil,
"not happy. prem elem 2020 crashing after clicking on 'export & share'"

Since it is a current version, I suggest you start a online "chat" session with Adobe staff where they can trouble shoot your system remotely.

not happy. prem elem 2020 crashing after clicking on 'export & share' after spinning for just about 10 sec, working with 4K30fps 7 sec test clip.  Tested on ver 2019, worked great. Cleared all media caches, rebooted to clear memory, and purchased the HEIF image ext, and HEVC video ext. (purchased before the crashing started to see if PE 2020 could handle 4K60 or 1080p220. It doesn't)

BTW, what is the highest quality mp4 PE can handle?, you guys (adobe) must already know this, please tell me so I can stop experimenting, thanks. ps I have also read the "Troubleshoot video files in Adobe Premiere Elements (Feb2019)"

"Could it be because I'm saving the video down to my SSD drive? "

Could you be running out of space on your SSD?   Premiere Elements needs a lot of spare space for intermediate working files.   Where are the project files and source files?  What are your choices in Preferences for "Scratch Disk" locations?

Thanks for all the comments. I've sorted the problem - which seems to originate from me being lazy with where I saved everything. The original performance issues were happening when I had everything (project files, videos, scratch disk) saved in the same place - in this case my SSD drive, which I believe is a problem in itself because you should ideally have your project files on a different disk to where your operating system is saved?

The last two videos I've edited, I've had my source files (the video clips that needed editing) on my external hard drive, and my working files including the PE project files themselves, on my D drive.

Finally, I've gone into Edit/Preferences, and altered the path of the scratch disks to my D drive also.

Hi there,

The basic system specifications are good enough for running Premiere Elements 2020. I understand you are getting playback and performance issues.

  • Which effects are you applying to the the timeline?
  • Which graphics card are you using? Have you checked if the graphics card drivers are updated to the latest version from the manufacturer's website?

Looking forward to the response.

Thanks,

Shivangi
