Question

Premiere Elements 10 can't import MP4 file

I have Premier Elements 10 and I wanted to import an MP4 file.  The MP4 was created using VHS Capture software called Elgato Video Capture.  Now I'd like to edit the file, but for some reason it won't import into Premiere Elements 10.

Any help and advice will be appreciated

Kind regards

Dave

Elgato is notorious for using codecs video editors struggle with.

There are better options for capturing from your screen, but if you're intent on using the Elgato, your best bet -- especially for a version as old as version 10 -- is to convert the file into a more tranditional MP4 codec using the free download Handbrake.

Hi Steve

Thanks for your very quick reply.  I purchased Elgato only a few days ago and it worked well until I tried to import the MP4.  I have VHS tapes of family movies to edit, so I'll try Handbrake as you suggest and I'll let you know how it goes.

I know I'm still using a very old Premiere Elements, but as it stands it still satisfies my basic needs.  Would the latest version work with Elgato, or will I still need Handbrake?  Maybe it's time to consider an upgrade if there are other benefits...

Kind regards

Dave

An upgrade would not likely solve your problems. Switching to a different video capture device and software would.

Delgato is simply not a good choice if you plan to edit your captured video in Premiere Elements.
