Professional/Subtle Transitions

I am currently in the process of making a documentary. However, the only professional or subtle transitions in Premiere Elements are dissolving effects. I want to vary my transitions between photos, but I want transitions that aren't so extravagant, but rather smoother and subtle. Does anyone know how to do this?

Might want to do some subtle Ken Burns effects instead.

    If you look at professionaly produced documentaries, you won't see much more than cuts and dissolves.

    L-cuts and J-cuts are very effective.
