Question

Re-edit a previous DVD movie made with Premier Elements

I've got quite a few DVD's that I made a few years ago which I didn't make a very good job of. I've tried using the option of adding media from a DVD but this doesn't seem to work properly.  The files come up as VOB files (whatever that means) so I've tried finding a program that will convert to MPEG which seems better. And I can only find free trial versions.

Can anyone advise (in simple language) the best way to go about this that would enable me to put transitions, effects and titles in that i should have done in the first place if I'd known what i was doing?

Thanks in advance.

Do you have the original project files and media?

Because the DVD's I want to re-edit are a few years old, the original clips have long since been deleted. So all I've got is the DVD itself.

In simple language, you can't edit DVD video files because when they were written to the DVD they were translated from "video camera language" (like MP4) to "DVD language" (like VOB).

There is a process called "ripping" that will translate DVD language back to video file language.  It is called ripping because when first invented it was used to "rip" or borrow commercial music or movies from disks you bought for your tv to files you could watch on your computer.

Google search for "how to edit dvd movies" and you should see various techniques for "ripping" DVDs.

Unfortuately, your results may be disappointing no matter what you do.  The process of making a DVD reduces the picture quality to what was appropriate when we played DVDs to tube TVs.
