Question

Saving as you go

Okay I have done several DVD's over the course of time and I have always "saved" as I went along and than at the end went to project archiver and copied the project. However today I went into my Adobe folder and my external to view exactly what was being saved and did not find my project from Premier Elements in my Adobe folder, I had not done that in the past. So my question is in Premier Elements should I also be doing a "save as" or a "save a copy" as I am going along? This would be in the event of a hard drive failure. Not sure why I hadn't discovered this before and guess I was just fortunate not to have a loss of my hard drive. I am using Windows 10, and Premier Elements 12.  Thanks.

I manually save versions of the project as I am working on it:

project name v1, project name v2, etc.

I save it to the drive I have my project on and then also save it to my backup drive so I always have at least two copies of the project files.

Did you save and name your project?

Once you've done that, the program will auto-save your project at regular intervals.

Though I'm not sure I'm clear what your question is. Are you trying to save different versions of your project as you work? That would be the only reason to save a copy.

What exactly are you trying to do?

Yes, I have saved and named my project but when I go to document files, Adobe, Premier Elements 12.0 I do not see any of the project files that I am working on. My concern is if my hard drive would crash where would my PE project be? If I were to do a fresh install of the program PE12 (for instance on another computer) and opened it would the files be stored on that or should they be in the other document folders that I have stated above? Thanks

Part 1 of your question concerns where the project file is.   If you can't find them where you think they are, do a search in Windows Explorer (or Finder on a Mac) and look for ".prel" files.

Part 2 of your question is about having the project files where you want them.  The opening screen after you start a new project has a "Save In" box with a "Browse" button.  The idea is that you tell your computer where you want to store your projects.  My prefered method is to create a new folder for every project.  In that folder I create sub folders for video clips, photo files, music tracks and output files.  I can move those folder to external storage and they get included in my computer back up routines.  Better, I know where everything is all the time.  I can be more specific if needed.

You are correct.  If your hard drive crashes and you install Premiere Elements 12 on a new computer, the project files you have created will not be with the new installation.   Again, I can be more specific if needed.
