SD Card corrupted after importing to Premiere Elements

I recently plugged my SD card into a reader into my laptops USB port, like I have many times before. I tried to upload videos from my card to Premiere Elements. All of the files were unable to open on either the software or my laptop there afterwards. After plugging my SD back into another laptop as well as the one I was using, the SD card was unreadable and needed to be formatted. Files still readable on my DSLR camera. After decided to format the card on my laptop, format was unsuccessful and now card is unable to read on my DSLR.

Why did this happen? How can I prevent this from happening?

You never format a card that is used for a camera in a laptop/pc etc.

You only format a card in the camera and only use that card in a camera.

Pop the card in the camera and see if it will format.

I personally would never import directly from a card into Elements.

I would copy/paste (using a card reader) entire content of the card to computer first and then ingest in Elements.

Some lingo:

uploading means transferring data from one computer to another.

Adding media to an editing program is called importing or ingesting.
