Question

Some .avi video get stuck at the same place when added to to assets

I am currently working on a Premiere Elements 2022 project and most .avi files (all from the same source and capture software) can be imported without a problem. However, about 1 out of 10 get stuck at "Generating peak file for xxx.avi" with a different %, always the same for a given file.

The files read fine in VLC, Windows Movies. I even used VLC to create a clip of one of those files but when I want to edit the file within Premiere, it is a little annoying.

It seems like this problem has been around for a while because I crossed it with multiple past version of Premiere Elements (been a user since Elements 12). Is there a work around for that? Can we disable generating those peak files?
Any suggestion would be welcome, I am trying to get this project done pretty urgently.

There could be any of thousands of codecs at work in that AVI. Open the AVI in the free download MediaInfo. In MediaInfo, set View to Text and then copy the text of this report and paste it to this forum. With this detailed information we may better be able to advise you.

Also advise us how much free, clean space is on your C or main hard drive.

That's a very basic DV-AVI. I don't see anything that would cause a problem for Premiere Elements. And you've got plenty of room on your hard drive. I assume you've got a modestly powered computer with adequate RAM.

So there's nothing I can see that would cause your problems. In fact, DV-AVIs are an old format that Premiere Elements should be able to handle without even working up a sweat! You might run into issues if your files are especially large, like more than 20-30 minutes, but even then it's unlikley.

Maybe someone else here will have a suggestion.
