Question

Stop appending _1 to filenames if they already exist.

I just upgraded from 2020 to 2025 and now every time I go to export a video that already exists, it automatically renames it by appending "_1" to the end of the file name. I need to maintain the same name as the original because I am updating elements that are used in other projects. Please provide an option to disable this feature. It already asks if I want to overwrite a file, which is fine. I just don't want to have to change the file name every time I export.

I'm concerned about "updating elements used in other projects".    Premiere Elements has never been "backward compatible".  As new features are added and old features deleted, the process of opening old projects has risks.   The addition of the "-1" is part of protecting your original projects from corruption.   It is adding the "-1" so that the original can be left intact.

Exporting is the same way.  It adds the suffix to protect what you already have.   In both cases, you can quickly edit the title to remove the "-1".

To be sure I was understanding your question, I created a small project in version 2023.  It included a simple title and a cut clip.  I opened that project in version 2025.  The simple title disappeared from the project.   The new title generation system is different!

This is not about using older project versions. I'm creating a video that uses other video clips that change from one week to the next. Instead of editing the entire video, I can edit the various components in seperate projcts and those updates will automatically be changed in the final video project. But that requires consistent file names. The program always prompts you if you use the same filename, so that is the safeguard. In Elements 2020, this worked perfectly. In Elements 2025 it always changes my filenames by appending "_1" to the end and I have to remember to change them or they will not update in the final video project. It seems like the pro version of Premiere has a setting to disable this feature, the elements version does not. I would loke to see an option to disable renaming files automatically.

That is correct. But that would be a setting in AME

Looks like a bug to me.

Filed a bugreport on this.
