Transistion: video and background (image)

I have a video clip of two people signing to each other. I want to use four different photographs for the background relating to the topics of the discussion. The video is one continuous clip. How do I apply the transitions ('Dip to Black' or 'Cross Dissolve') to both video and backdrops?

That's a bit tough to sync up.

I'd recommend you create an output of your split screen video composition -- using Export & Share/Device/Computer/1920x1080 MP4 -- and use this composite in your project rather than separate clips. Then you're only applying the transition to one clip.

Why not just output the composition with no transitions applied, and then apply the transitions to the single movie you output?

Thanks. Please clarify when you said to output the composition and then

use this composite in the project. What I have done is to add several

video clips and images (as well as titles), export and then import the

MP4 composite into another project, then I apply transitions. It does

work well except where there the video (clip 1) ends and clip 2 begins,

I had to use 'step forward/back' to ascertain the precise CTI position

then splice it so that the transition can be applied accurately. Is that

the way to do it or is there an easier way?

Thanks. I think I get what you are suggesting. Just to clarify: am I correct I need to split the clip into four clips, then apply fade out at the end of each clips. Then import all four clips into a new Project, add four backdrops and just apply fade out/in's in between each?
