Question

unknown error opening project file

Like many other folks, I've now fallen to the issue where Premiere Elements won't open a project file. I get the message "unknown error opening file." I've seen a lot of other people with this issue. The autosaves also have the same issue. I've tried Adobe's online suggestions, but none of them work. I have successfully unzipped the file to get to the XML, but I don't know how to find where the error is in the XML. Has anyone figured out how to recover from this error? I hate the idea of starting over.

Thanks!

Opens just fine in 2023.

Yep. Opens just fine for me too.

Are you on Windows or Mac? Was this project file created by version 2023?

What happens if you start a new file, add a couple of photos to the timeline, then save the file. Can you open this new file?

This is on a Windows 10 machine. I'm using Adobe Premiere Elements 2019. I've now started saving the project file with a unique name every 15 minutes or so to increase the chance that I can recover from this.

I've got other files that open successfully - I've been using this software for many years (earlier versions before 2019). I created a new file and saved it and it opens just fine. There's something buggy that sometimes causes these files to get corrupt and I don't know what it is.

It's interesting that it opens in 2023...I'm quite hesitant to spend money on the newer version when the version I have has been giving me trouble, and when Adobe abandons support so early (they told me they no longer support the 2019 version).

I have never had that problem, so I don't have a solution

I will say that for the future it is a good idea to do a SAVE AS at the end of every day (or more often) to save a new project file... so if you have the problem again you will be able to go back to the previous day's project
