Upgrade for Prem elements 2015 to 2018

I am currently using PE 2015. Do I have to do a full install of 2018 upgrade and then retrieve the backup file of PE 2015 or can I just do an Upgrade of 2015 to 2018?

2018 is a separate install it will run side by side of 2015.

Will the organizer know to grab the existing files from the 2015 organizer or do I have to open and find that file

When you install version 2018, it will recognize your older catalog and offer to upgrade it to the current version.
