While using PE 11 on windows 10 os  the video and audio pauses/freezes after a second or two. Pressing play again gives same result

Whenever I get a freeze, I turn off all of my other programs, including the ones that prepared graphics, video or audio for the movie. (Once prepared, you don't need them anymore.)

Then I turn off my computer. (Re-start would probably work as well, but I'm paranoid there's something that sneaks back in on a re-start...). Neutralize all your auto-start programs.

Turn the computer back on, and only launch Premier Elements and give it another try. If that works, it's either because memory got over-loaded or a program running in the background got in the way.

If it doesn't work, ... back to the drawing board.

I agree with Willie. As I said above, a stop (as opposed to a pause) indicates that another process is interrupting your playback. Possible culprits include antivirus software (though it shouldn't) or, on slower computers, a Windows background process like indexing. More nefarious malware may also be lurking in, in which case it never hurts to run Malware Bytes.

Bill has an interesting thought in suggesting that the pause may be caused by some background program.

But if that is the cause, you'll experience a complete stop of your playback. Not a pause and play thing.

Is it a pause or complete stop?

A pause means that program is not able to budget its resources. (Remember that version 11 is a 32-bit program, so it can't use more than 4 gigs of your RAM.) But a stop means that some outside process is interrupting things.

Steve, I called it a pause but stop would be a better description. As the video briefly plays it stops as if I hit the pause button. The play/pause toggle goes back to (>) , waits for an input and when clicked on again repeats the same scenario with a 1 second or less play time (Playback will not resume on its own).

Also, what model of camcorder is the video coming from and what is the video's format and resolution?

What processor are you running on your computer with how much RAM?

And, re Bob's question, when you first add your clip to your timeline, do you see a yellow orange "render" line above the clip? This render line indicates that your project settings are not matching your video specs, which can great reduce the program's performance.

I'm using a Canon Vixia HFS200 with AVCHD specs and resolution at 1920x1080 HD. I do not have a yellow orange render line displayed when clips are added. My computer is a Dell XPS 8500, i7-3770, 3.4Ghz and 8G ram. This is what I have been using previously without any editing problems. I noticed that when I double click a video clip in Elements organizer it plays normally but when added to the editor it does the play/pause routine where it plays briefly and then stops as if the pause button was clicked. When it does this auto pause the indicator also changes from (>) to (ll).

It obviously should not be doing that.  For a guess, try changing the Hardware Acceleration selection in Preferences.

There also has been a couple posts here about audio mismatches in the project that can cause odd behavior.  If the project is trying to "transcode" the audio, it gets stuck.

Does it happen if you render the timeline?
