Write-On effect with Premiere Elements 2021

Question

Has anyone successfully used the write-on effect with Premiere Elements 2021? It seems like I can only position the brush with the coordinates and not by selecting anything graphically. The onnline help about the feature is useless:

I've also looked at this:

However, there is no circled brush position. Am I missing something or does this feature just not work?

It's not a well-designed feature. Even when it works. My feeling is that Adobe sort of abandoned it rather than fix it.

I am using Premiere Elements 14 and I am having the same problem.  It will work but will test your patience to the limit.  Results will not come quickly.  I have to keep rendering and waiting for the program to catch up to my actions.  Very troublesome.
