Question

Better than DaVinci Resolve ?

I'm hesitating between Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve. Can you tell me what features exist in Premiere Pro that don't exist in DaVinci Resolve, and that would justify the huge price difference? I understand there are other reasons to choose Premiere, like it being the market leader and allowing certain integrations, such as with After Effects. But I really want to know in what specific areas Premiere Pro, as an editing software, is actually better than DaVinci Resolve.

    Hi, @Jdumo :

Is this for a personal project or for employment?

If it's for a personal project, you could install the 7-day trial of Premiere and the free version of Resolve, then go through some introductory tutorials side-by-side. Seven days is a little rushed, though — you might consider subscribing to Premiere for one month (about $35 in the US) to give yourself more time with each application. Since it sounds like you're going the self-taught route, the one that feels intuitive and has learning resources you can easily follow will likely drive your choice.

If this is for employment, research the hard skills that potential employers are looking for. Depending on the type of company — a media or entertainment company, a creative or advertising agency, an organization with in-house video needs, or individual clients — you'll likely need Premiere Pro or Media Composer, though DaVinci Resolve and Final Cut are also worth considering.

You can truly achieve the same results in any editing software these days, and it often comes down to personal preference. In my opinion, Premiere’s customizable interface, deep keyboard shortcut integration, and very flexible timeline make it, hands down, the fastest and most flexible editing tool out there. And that's what I spend most of my time doing: the actual editorial part of the process, not graphics or color or audio mix. I can work very quickly on the keyboard with custom mappings. There are several ways to accomplish any one task in Premiere at any given moment, and the third-party extensions really expand what’s possible. The customization also lets me set up workspaces for many different scenarios.

You’ve already touched on the main reasons for me. The ability to use layers from Photoshop, borrow affects and features from After Effects, being able to sweeten audio in Audition all seamlessly.
