First time using rush.. videos are having scratchy sound and very jumpy.

Would anybody be able to share advice for a newbie. I have download there exact same sized files form the pexcels site to develop my editing skills. The videos playing in rush are terrible scratchy sound and very jumpy any resources for editing video in this way but assume all videos would be treated the same.
