Question

Jittery playback whilst editing

Hi all,

When I'm editing videos the playback is very jittery (i.e. I don't get a smooth video). This makes editing very difficult. If I export (share) the video it plays fine.

So, the question is; Is my laptop just not up to it? It's a 2014 Mac Book Pro with a 2.6 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5 processor (don't laugh!). Alternatively is there a way to reduce the resolution of the playback in Ru so that I can at least get a smooth playback.

As usual, your assistance is very much appreciated.

Hello @leep40312335,

I read your message. It appears you are having performance issues with an outdated computer. The key is the format you are using may not be optimal. Are these H.264 or HEVC clips? That's likely. If so, I can recommend running your clips through freeware called Shutter Encoder and transcoding to ProRes LT in HD. That codec is makes it much easier to edit with your clips. Please try a test and see if it works. Note: ProRes files are quite large, so do prepare your hard drive to have enough space and headroom. I hope the advice helps. Sorry for the frustration.

Thanks,
Kevin

Thanks for the reply Kevin.

I'm editing clips from my GoPro camera, which I believe are H.264, for publication via social media (so, nothing fancy!).

Since my original query, I've found the preview setting (View > Preview Quality) and set it to Low. Although the quality is indeed 'low' at least it plays without the jitter and gives me some idea what the finished video will look like. I've also set the option to 'Use Optomised Clips' although I'm not 100% sure if this gives me any improvement or not.

I'll give your suggestion a try to see if its better than tweaking the preview quality.

Once again, thanks for your reply.
