Pan and Zoom appears choppy

Hello all,

 

We have been using Premiere Rush for 3 years, and recently, we are observing that any time we use the automatic Pan and Zoom feature, the effect looks incredibly choppy. See demo video on YouTube:

Specifically, through testing, we found that when importing images when initially creating the project (0:00, 0:04, and 0:07) and automatically applying Pan and Zoom, the issue exists. However, on each individual image in the sequence, if we turn off Pan and Zoom, then turn it back on, the effect is seemingly lessened (see 0:09).


We also found slight success manually adjusting the frame rate from 30 to 60 frames per second, but it only looked slightly better.

 

Still, the behavior doesn't match what we've observed in the past 3 years of using Premiere Rush.

 

We tested this on both versions 2.9 and 2.10. For some reason, I don't see the ability to install to the latest version as of the time of this post (2.10.0.11) to see if that works.

 

My specific machine, others on the team have slightly different builds, but the errors are the same across all machines:

  • CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-9880H CPU @ 2.30GHz 2.30 GHz
  • GPU: Intel UHD Graphics 360, NVIDIA Quadro RTX 4000
  • RAM: 32 GB DDR4
  • Operating System: Windows 10

    First, I appreciate your thorough testing and the demo video you shared. It’s very helpful in understanding the problem. Here are a few steps you can try:

     

    1. Optimize still images. Ensure that the raw images are not oversized. For HD, the images should be less than 4K. For 4K, try 5K. Target DPI to 72. If they are larger than that, then you can experience such issues. Usually, I like to optimize all my images before beginning an editing session.
    2. Update to the Latest Version: If you haven’t already, please try updating to the latest version of Premiere Rush. Sometimes, updates include important bug fixes and performance improvements.
    3. Adjust Frame Rate: As you mentioned, adjusting the frame rate from 30 to 60 fps has improved performance. This can help smooth out the Pan and Zoom effect.
    4. Manual Adjustment: Turning off and then manually reapplying the Pan and Zoom effect on each image seems to lessen the choppiness. While this is not ideal, it might be a temporary workaround until a more permanent fix is available.
    5. Check System Performance: Ensure that other applications are not heavily using your system resources while working on Premiere Rush. Closing unnecessary programs can sometimes improve performance.

    Hi Kevin,

     

    Thanks for following up with these helpful tips.

     

    I was able to find the issue: we had always pulled our images off of a DAM web software. Some users were experiencing lag when using the original, full-sized images from the DAM. So, we said to use their standard, compressed size when downloading, which worked for a while. There must've been a change to the DAM, because now the compressed size is under 1920 pixels wide, so the lag was being caused by the images being too small. We reverted back, and the lag issue is gone. If anything, we will have to add a step for our team to use image processor in Photoshop to get the original-siozed images to at most 1920 pixels wide.     I appreciate the message. Scaling does impact the GPU, @stephenb12860235 so that's why that was likely happening. Usually, though, it's because the images are too large. 🙂
