The 'expand audio' icon

I am not yet successful in lengthening the audio portion of a video separate from the visual part of the video. Instead the entire video is being expanded. I want the audio of this first video to also be the uniterupted sound tract heard over other clips I am splicing into the video. What am I failing to do?
