Why does render take so long at 00:00:00?

When I'm rendering a video, everything goes pretty smoothly but then when the progress bar reaches 00:00:00, it takes forever for the render to complete and for the Publish menu to become available (and the Done button enabled).

Why is this and what can I do to speed things up?
