12-Jan-2026 update, changed highlighting in comment (Reader and Pro), please revert

Hello,

The recent 12-Jan-2026 seems to have changed how highlighting works in the comment tool.

It used to be possible to highlight in a blank area , for example under a block of text or music stave, then add text notes. It would also straighten out the drawn highlighter line, which was useful.

Since the update, highlight trys to find adjacent text or objects and selects them, often incorrectly. It no longer highlights a length of text or blank space.

I find it far less useful now than it was. Please revert to how it used to behave prior to the recent update.

I can (sort of) do what I want using the draw tool, setting colour and opacity to get a similar effect, but it no longer straigtens out the drawn line. It also means setting the draw tool to do what I want everytime I use it.

Thanks, Colin.

@Colin Butcher You might want to consider going back in the classic interface, the Highlight tool should return to its previous behavior, allowing you to drag across blank areas (like music staves) without it jumping to nearby text. View - Disable new Acrobat.

If by chance you still want the new Acrobat, you could try holding the Command key (MAC) or Control key (PC) while you drag the highlighter. In previous versions, this key served as a toggle to bypass text recognition and allow freehand highlighting.

Well, "new Acrobat" is disabled.  It has been for a while (as in pretty much since it was distributed in an update). The change in behaviour for highlighting in Comments was distributed recently (mid-Jan 2026 I believe), both in Acrobat Reader and Acrobat Pro.
