Question

3D Comments and 3D Measurement Tool Performance

Hi,

I find that when viewing 3D PDFs, the 3D Comment and 3D Measurement Tool Annotations slow the system down drastically, even causing Acrobat to "freeze". The native CAD software does not have any issues with the respective 3D data. Is there something that can be done to help with this (system specs below)?

Typical 3D PDF file size = ~20Mb

System:

  • Intel(R) Xeon(R) E-2174G CPU @3.80GHz
  • Installed RAM = 32.0GB
  • 64-bit Operating System
  • Windows 10 Enterprise
  • GPU = Intel(R) UHD Graphics P630 with 16GB plus NVIDIA Quadro P1000 with 4GB

Thank you!

Hi,

We have tried many potential solutions; however, the "commenting" functionality with 3D PDFs is not performing as desired.

We have reached out to others within the industry and it appears they are using PowerPoint / screen shots to markup/review 3D PDFs and Model Based Engineering Definition.

It would be much appreciated if the "commenting" functionality could be improved as it has been very effective for years when reviewing traditional 2D engineering drawings.

Thank you all and I appreciate your responses,

Eric

@good_loyalty7785 it's not the best, but you can try to optimize Acrobat 3D Rendering Settings. Go to Acrobat Preferences:
Go to Edit > Preferences > Multimedia & 3D. Experiment with lowering the Rendering to see if it improves responsiveness.

Once you save the PDF, Finalize and Flatten Annotations: Once you're done with the annotations, consider "flattening" them (if you don't need to edit them further). Flattening integrates the annotations directly into the 3D content, which can sometimes improve rendering performance, although it makes them uneditable. To flatten, Save as PDF, Optimizd - Settings. Be cautious as this is irreversible on the current copy. You might want to work on a copy of your PDF.

Hi there

Hope you are doing well and thanks for reaching out.

Is this an issue with a particular PDF file or with all the PDFs? Please try with different 3D PDFs and check.

Also, what is the version of the Acrobat app you are using? Go to Help > About Acrobat and make sure it's updated to the latest version, 25.01.2043X. Then, Go to Help > Check for updates and reboot the computer once.

This slowdown can sometimes occur due to the complexity of the 3D model, especially when annotations like 3D Comments or Measurements are enabled. These tools add an additional processing layer to Acrobat, which can strain system resources.

Here are a few suggestions that might tr:

1. Ensure you're using the latest version of Acrobat.

2.  If possible, simplify or optimize the 3D model before exporting it to PDF. Reducing polygon count or removing unnecessary metadata can help.

3. Try limiting the use of 3D comments and measurement tools during initial viewing. Once the model is loaded and stable, add annotations selectively.

If you’re still encountering consistent freezing, we’d love to take a closer look. Could you share a sample file and a small video recording of the steps you are taking and the issue as it occurs for more clarity?
