Question

A newly saved PDF name is not shown in the Read thumbnails.

I often have several PDF’s open in Adobe reader, so I use the thumbnails (list of files when I put the cursor on the Adobe Reader icon in my Windows taskbar) to locate a particular file. 

I’m not sure when this started but now the filename in the thumbnails doesn’t get updated to reflect the new PDF filename. Instead it remains the same as when the PDF was first opened in Reader. Is this a bug? I’ve looked for a way to refresh the filenames but have not found any. The only “solution” is to exit Reader and restart it (I have the option to reopen the PDF’s that were open in the previous session).

    If you’re using Save As, you’re not opening the file in Acrobat. The thumbnail list faithfully reports on the files you open in Acrobat. And they won’t until you open the file in Acrobat.

     

    I’ve learned this from personal experience. This may seem counter-intuitive to us humans, but it’s eminently logical in Acrobat terms and it’s working as intended. Computers are stupid, but eminently logical machines. It has no idea of what it should do; only what it’s been programmed to do. For better or worse, the way they’re programmed is generally the way they respond.

     

    Edit: DFWTechGuy’s suggestion is absolutely worth checking out to help define the problem. If you shut down Acrobat, then re-open it, does the thumbnails report that you were working with your Save As(ed) file?

      Randy, the answer to your question asking if after shutting Adobe down and reopening it corrects the problem is yes. But I’m a bit confused between your response and  DFWTechGuy’s posts, which imply that Adobe support felt that this was a bug. The good news is that I now know how to get around the problem, but it still a little unclear as to whether Adobe is complicit. Your post certainly makes sense, but I’m almost 100% sure that it didn't use to work this way.

      I know nothing of the “reported bug” that DFWTechGuy described. But when you select the File>Save As… menu command (keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+S) do you have the option to rename the file? And when you do, are you naming it something else?

       

      In that case, you’re bypassing the reported bug. So let’s set that aside.

       

      • If you can name the file something else, do so. Click the Save button, and confirm that the open file has your new filename.
      • Now close it. Can you see the file thumbnail in the Acrobat Recent list for the old filename, but not the new one? Or do you see them both? Let me know what you get.
      • Open Windows File Explorer. Open the Preview pane, if it’s not already open in the File Explorer window.
      • Navigate to where the old file and the new file is/are. Can you see previews of the documents in the Preview pane? Now switch the File View to Large Icons in the File Explorer window. Are you seeing thumbnails for the files in File Explorer? Let me know what happens here too.
      • If you can see the old filename, but not the new one in the File Explorer, close and re-open the File Explorer window. Can you see both thumbnails now? Let me know what happens when you do that too.
      • Now finally, shut down Acrobat. Open it again and confirm that you can see both thumbnails upon reopening. And yeah, I need to know things are still working as you expect here as well.

       

      These aren’t just busy drills. Doing this, and letting me know the answers, helps us define whether we’re dealing with a Windows issue, an Acrobat issue, and when it makes things copacetic. We can figure out more from there.

      This sounds like an Acrobat/Windows taskbar refresh issue rather than the PDF itself. There was a very similar Adobe Community report where the filename shown in the Windows taskbar stayed at the original name after Save As, and Adobe confirmed it as a bug.

      I'd first check Help > Check for updates and make sure Reader is fully updated. Also try Preferences > Documents and enable “Always use file name as document title,” then restart Reader. Adobe still documents this preference for controlling how the PDF filename is displayed.

      If the Reader tabs show the new filename correctly but the taskbar thumbnails don't, that would make the Windows taskbar preview the more likely source of the issue.

      I overlooked your response initially. I believe you may be correct regarding the source of the error. In my reply earlier to Amal, I had asked him if updating to  26.002.21931 might help. I went ahead and installed it plus I verified that the  “Always use file name as document title” preference was checked. Neither of these fixed the issue. Do you have any other suggestions? I’m guessing that the bug report you mentioned has not been addressed yet.

      To help us look into this, could you confirm the following?

      • Which version of Acrobat Reader do you have installed (Help > About Adobe Acrobat Reader)?

      • Which Windows version are you running (Windows 10 or 11)?

      • Does this happen specifically after using "Save As" to rename the file, or also after other actions like "Save a Copy"?

      • Does the tab title inside Reader itself update correctly to the new filename, even though the taskbar thumbnail doesn't?

      • Also, share a small video recording of the steps you are taking and the issue as it occurs for more clarity.

      In the meantime, please check that Acrobat Reader is updated to the latest version (Help > Check for Updates), in case this has already been addressed in a recent release.

       I currently have 26.002.21901. There is an available update 26.002.21931. Should I try that or do you have any idea if it might contain a fix?

      Which Windows version are you running (Windows 10 or 11)?

       Windows 11

      Does this happen specifically after using "Save As" to rename the file, or also after other actions like "Save a Copy"?

       I only have used ”Save as”

       Yes, the tab title does get updated.

       

      I do not know how to create a video, so unless you can educate me I’ll just have to provide this type of response.
