Accessibility reading order tool orders items in a reverse fashion

I am now trying to place some tags around text in a document in French. Whenever I place a new tag, it is sent ALL the way back in the tag view, making it appear to screen readers like its the first paragraph when in fact its the last paragraph. This means I need to manually drag each new tag to the end of the reading order so it makes sense for screen readers.

 

Why does this happen, and is there a workaround?

First, are you using the tags panel?

This one?

XML tags are NOT used for PDF Accessibility, so do not use this panel.

It causes the problems you are seeing.

 

RE: Tags

Instead, designate which tag to apply to a paragraph of text through a Paragraph Style.

 

Reading Order:

The RO in the PDF's Tags Panel is controlled by many things in InDesign:

  1. How your text frames are threaded into stories.
  2. How your stories and elements are sequenced in the Articles Panel (top most item is read first).
  3. How your elements are sequenced in the Layers Panel (follows the stacking order, or bottom most item is read first).

 

Your questions are very elementary for accessible PDFs from InDesign. Take a class to learn how make accessible PDFs from InDesign:

As you are experiencing issues in tagging a document, could you please check if you experience the same behavior with other documents?

If yes, please share a small video of the issue occurring at your end. Share the Acrobat and OS version.

Also, share a sample document so we can replicate the behavior.
