Acrobat 26.001.21771 crashes (access violation) when opening PDFs with a hidden Text annotation

After updating to Acrobat 26.001.21771 (Windows 11 Pro, x64), Acrobat crashes immediately when opening certain PDFs: the window opens, shows a blank page, then closes. Windows Event Log shows an APPCRASH in Acrobat.dll 26.1.21771.0, exception 0xc0000005 / 0xc000041d, fault offset 0x33a57ff (deterministic, same offset every time). Previous Acrobat versions opened the same files fine, and Chrome still renders them correctly.

By bisecting the PDF I isolated the trigger: a hidden Text (sticky note) annotation (/Subtype /Text, /F 2, /T "ISDOC", UTF-16 /Contents) inserted by the Czech invoicing service iDoklad (PDF producer: PDFsharp 1.51.5185 into every invoice it generates. Removing this single annotation fixes the file; a blank page containing only this annotation reproduces the crash (sample attached - no appearance stream, no attachments, no fonts, no images needed).

This affects every invoice issued by iDoklad (a widely used Czech invoicing service), so the impact is broad.

Steps to reproduce:
  1. Open the attached acrobat-crash-repro.pdf in Acrobat 26.001.21771
  2. Acrobat displays a blank page and crashes within ~2 seconds

I can provide more crash logs or WER reports if needed.

Thank you. I have uploaded the full crash dump here.

The dump was generated immediately after reproducing the crash in Acrobat 26.001.21789 (64-bit) while opening one of the affected PDF invoices.

Please let me know if you need any additional information or testing from my side.

I can confirm what appears to be the same issue with POHODA, another widely used Czech accounting and invoicing system (STORMWARE).

I am using Adobe Acrobat 2026.001.21771 (64-bit) on Windows 11. After the recent Acrobat update, PDF invoices containing ISDOC cause Acrobat to crash shortly after opening. Older invoices created years ago are affected as well.

I have been in contact with STORMWARE support and we were able to narrow the issue down to ISDOC-related PDFs:

    • PDF exported from POHODA without ISDOC opens normally.
    • The same type of PDF with ISDOC causes Acrobat to crash.
    • The affected PDF opens normally in Chrome.
    • If I open it in Chrome and print it to a new PDF, the resulting PDF opens normally in Acrobat.
    • Completely uninstalling and reinstalling Acrobat did not resolve the issue.
    • This started only after updating Acrobat to 26.001.21771.

Interestingly, if another normal PDF is already open in Acrobat, I can sometimes open the affected POHODA invoice in another tab without a crash. Opening the affected invoice directly as the first document reliably causes Acrobat to crash.

So this does not appear to be limited to iDoklad. POHODA-generated invoices with ISDOC are affected as well. I will also forward the findings from this thread to STORMWARE so they can check whether their ISDOC implementation contains the same /Subtype /Text annotation or a similar structure.

    Hi potmesil and Luďka35447862pact,

Thank you for reaching out and reporting this.

We appreciate the detailed information you provided. Could you please try updating to the latest version, 26.001.21789, which was released recently? After updating, check if you still experience the same behavior when opening these invoice PDFs. For more information about the latest Acrobat version, please refer to the following help page: Acrobat Release Notes.

Please confirm whether the issue still occurs with this version. If it does, kindly share the crash logs with us using the steps suggested here: Collect logs when Acrobat/Reader crashes or freezes.

Let us know if you have any questions or need further assistance.

    Thanks,

Thank you. I have updated Acrobat to 26.001.21789 (64-bit), but unfortunately the issue is still present and the behavior remains unchanged.

I also followed the instructions for collecting crash information and successfully reproduced the crash. I now have a full crash dump of approximately 598 MB (174 MB compressed as ZIP).

The file is too large to attach directly to the forum. Please let me know the preferred way to provide the crash dump to you, and I will upload it.

The affected PDF invoices with the ISDOC-related structure still crash Acrobat, while PDFs without ISDOC open normally.
