I have an installed licenced copy of Acrobat 8 , but running windows 10 . Although it runs , we do get error messages etc ... Am I able to upgrade a compatible version of acrobat without incurring additional costs ?

no. there's no acrobat 8 version compatible with win 10.
you would need to upgrade to acrobat dc (either subscription or perpetual license), but that's not free and acrobat 8 doesn't qualify for upgrade pricing, Software & Services
