Acrobat crashing when attempting to read forms with NVDA

Acrobat crashes immediatiely when reading checkboxes and radio buttons with NVDA.

This has been ocurring for at least two days as of August 20, 2025.

For NVDA users, this means they cannot read or fillout accessible PDF forms. For me, this means I cannot test the accessible PDF forms I am creating. This is critical to debug.

I’m having the same issue and agree-- this is a critical fix. If blind users can’t use forms, they can’t access services, which is a blatant violation of the ADA.

I'm encountering a similar glitch too.  Running the latest NVDA, no update available for Acrobat Pro and on navigating through a sample PDF I'm able to navigate headings with either hitting "H" or the number (1-6) for heading level one through six just fine.  Can click "L" for going to a list and "I" for list item navigation.  But when I hit "T" to go to the one table in the document, it consistently crashes Acrobat and brings up an error reporting pop up.  I used to have both Acrobat Reader and Acrobat Pro on my prior work laptop and would read PDFs with the Reader version, assuming not every end user would have Acrobat Pro installed.  Now to go ask some forums about this too.

Hello @Douglass5C39

I hope you are doing well, and we are sorry for the delayed response and trouble. Please install the latest build of Acrobat: 25.001.2084x. Planned update: November 3, 2025. Check for any pending updates by navigating to Menu > Help> Check for Updates. Install the updates, restart the app and the machine, and try again.

Check Table Tagging:

  • Open the PDF in Acrobat Pro, go to All Tools > Prepare for Accessibility > Reading Order, and inspect the table structure. If the table is not properly tagged (e.g., missing tags), try re-tagging it using the Accessibility Checker or the “Autotag Document” feature.
  • In Acrobat, go to Menu> Preferences > Accessibility, and try toggling “Enable assistive technology support” and “Use document structure for tab order.” Restart Acrobat and NVDA, then test again.

If the issue still continues, please provide the following information: the current version of the operating system on your device and the logs from the affected machine. To collect the logs, download and run the Log Collector tool. Ensure that you select all log options and attempt to reproduce the issue. After that, close the Log Collector tool; it will generate the logs along with a log ID. Please share this log ID with us for further investigation.

Thanks,

Anand Sri.

I’m encountering this issue, too. Super frustrating. This will be a severe barrier for blind users and they won’t be able to complete forms and access services if required forms include checkboxes. Please make this a top priority to fix. NVDA (screenreader) is free so you can download it and reproduce the issue. Thank you for your work on this.

Hi @KTdid.

Thank you for reaching out to us.

To help us investigate the issue further, could you provide the steps that led to the crash?
If possible, sharing the document that consistently causes the crash would also be very helpful.

Looking forward to your response.

Regards,
Ayush Jain

Hi. The crash happens with any interactive PDF exported from InDesign that contains a checkbox or radio button. I have created brand new documents with only one checkbox  on the page and this will cause the crash.  (I have been sending reports to Adobe that include my email address and have received no response.) Thanks!

-Remove the application and run the cleaner tool (https://adobe.ly/4lIb7KX).
-Reboot the machine
-Install Adobe Acrobat from the following page: https://adobe.ly/3JnRwSM.

If the issue still occurs, please collect the logs using the diagnostic tool and share the log ID here.

The crash is ocuring with many documents. I created many versions to determine if the intial document or a specific tag scenario in a doucment was the issue. The issue is Acrobat.

I'll try some of the troubleshooting. Thanks.

I would suggest you post this to an NVDA specific forum, and/or speak with an accessibility expert. Problems with the NVDA screen reader and Acrobat are widely reported. I've seen some posted solutions, such as changing Acrobat preferences. I am not an accessibility export and don't know if any of the solutions work, or are the same as what you are seeing.
