Question

Acrobat DC keeps crashing while creating forms

I'm having possibly the same problem, trying to create a simple PDF form to send and get back by email while allowing the submitters to save and print their submissions. Using a Macbook Air (with Sierra 10.12.3 and Adobe Acrobat Pro DC version 15.023), I created a 2-page fillable form following the instructions in the Lynda tutorial by Garrick Chow. I used the automatic detection feature so Adobe inserted all the text fields, and then manually inserted the radio button groups. There are 10 text fields for name and address etc., two radio button groups, and a large multi-line text box. I've spent many hours on this, have started over from the Word file twice, and I still don't have a usable form. The only apps open on the Mac are Chrome and Acrobat Pro DC. I'm so exasperated.

1. The major problem is that Acrobat DC keeps crashing. It now crashes reliably whenever I click on the arrow at the right of the screen to open the sidebar showing my fields. The problem report has this near the top; can anyone translate for me?:

Crashed Thread:        0  Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread

Exception Type:        EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)

Exception Codes:      KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at 0x0000000000000060

Exception Note:        EXC_CORPSE_NOTIFY

Termination Signal:    Segmentation fault: 11

Termination Reason:    Namespace SIGNAL, Code 0xb

Terminating Process:  exc handler [0]

I have gone back several saves to see if I get to something more stable, but no luck. In one early version I followed the instructions to insert both Print and Reset buttons, but those never showed up on the form when I opened it in Reader or Preview, nor did they work anywhere except in Preview mode of Acrobat DC. So I've deleted them, as that's when the crashing seems to have started.

2. When I open the form in Reader, the fields are shown in light blue with no text. When I click into the fields, the text shows up on a white background, but it disappears again when I click out of the field. Oddly, though, they appear just fine in Preview, and they print. In Reader, the text does not print.

I stumbled across a feature in Acrobat DC which I hoped would improve things: File/Save As Other/Reader Extended, where I selected Enable More Tools. I'm not sure whether this made a difference, but it seemed like a fine idea.

I'll try one last time starting from the original Word document, but this isn't the first time I've been totally frustrated trying to learn to use Acrobat to create forms. If I can just figure it all out I'll use it a lot, but at the moment I am not getting anywhere. Does anybody have a recommendation for a better tutorial system than Lynda? The Acrobat tutorials are way too simplistic and don't have the level of detail that Lynda does, but even though Garrick Chow is doing all his stuff on a Mac, my mileage varies.

Many thanks from a somewhat desperate little old lady.

Same issue here. I was editing a form, saved it, closed DC, reopened the form and when attempting to open the 'Prepare Form' tool, DC crashes and there is no message. I tried to clear the preferences as instructed above but problem still exists. Please help Adobe!

Same issue here. It feels hopeless.

I've had this problem twice after windows updates.

My solution was simple. I had to log in to adobe with the sign in button at the top right.

Using pro features like form editor may require the program to verify pro license. Still this is a bug, It shouldn't just crash, it should prompt for a sign in.

Since I posted this a couple of days ago, I have spent tons of time trying to solve the problem. I took my Macbook Air 2014 to the Genius Bar at my local Apple Store. They checked both hardware and software and deemed everything to be healthy and in great running condition, so the problem is not my Mac. However, Adobe Acrobat DC kept crashing, as it had been doing at home, except that it crashed at different times. At the Genius Bar, Adobe DC crashed every time we selected the Preview button. The only thing they could offer, besides a complete reformat of my hard drive, was to reinstall the OS (Sierra 10.12.3), which they did. The problem remains.

Today, I have had better luck creating my form from a Mac Pages document instead of a Microsoft Word 365 one. Adobe was no longer crashing, until I tried to reopen the form I had filled out using Adobe Reader DC. When I clicked on the 'Prepare Form' tool and allowed it to open the from, it crashed. It appears to be the same error; at least the lines I copied in my initial post are the same.

The forms still do not work properly. The chief problem is that the radio button fields do not work, and they are differently wrong in Mac Preview and Adobe Acrobat Reader DC (all the latest versions).  In Mac Preview, the buttons appear but you can select any or all of them. In Reader, none of the buttons appear but you can make a filled circle appear next to only the first selection in each field (i.e. the Poster and A topic).

Anybody have any other ideas?

Hi piperBrian,

Please try to reset preferences of the Acrobat application.

Refer the steps provided here: How to reset Preference settings in Acrobat.

Dear Meenakshi,

I already installed the most recent Acrobat Reader, in order to test the form outside Acrobat DC. I deleted it (moved to Trash), emptied trash, rebooted. But now when I try to install Reader again, a popup says 'Found a higher version, installation will terminate'. I've searched using Finder and cannot locate any instances of the Reader app.

I also tried creating the form again in Acrobat DC, this time with the auto-detect form fields feature turned off. Same problem recurring.

So to recap, I am now even further behind. There is apparently a version of Acrobat Reader DC on my computer, but I cannot find it.

Hi janetr89573057,

Could you please try updating application to the latest patch released.

You can refer this link for more information on latest updates: Release Notes | Adobe Acrobat, Reader

If that does not resolve the issue, try to uninstalling and restart your system.

Then try to re-install application from here: Download Pro or Standard versions of Acrobat DC, XI, or X

Let us know how it goes.

Regards,

Meenakshi
