When converting an Illustrator file to PDF - I'm getting the error "The PDF document contained image masks that were not downsampled"  -

The smallest I can get the file is 110 MB. I need a smaller PDF file.

So, I found this topic from 2009 - but it was still unanswered and closed for comments. I found a solution. When you "Save As" from Illustrator, you have the option to un-check "Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities."   - UN-CHECK this box.

My file changed from 10MB to 5MB by doing this - and no error messages.

You lose the ability to edit this PDF in Illustrator easily, but who's doing that anyways??? You're most likely going back to your native file to make any edits.
