Acrobat freezes after opening a document, killing Acrobat Licensing Service background process makes it run again (win11)

Hello,
we have multiple people with Adobe Acrobat that get random freezes upon opening some .pdf files. It doesn’t happen everytime and apparently killing the Acrobat Licensing Service background process in Win11 makes it run again. Would you have any suggestion what could cause that? So far we tried some recommended steps I found online, but nothing helped so far

What we tried:
- relogging to Acrobat
- reinstalling the app through Creative Cloud
- disabling the use of online storage on opening/saving files in Preferences
- disabling the use of page cache in Preferences + clearing our the cache folder in %localappdata%\Adobe\Acrobat\DC\Cache

    Hello,
so after some time, it appears that some of the colleagues were ok with just resetting the cache and turning off the page cache  + the use of online storages when opening/saving the files.

Some others report improvement after disabling the new Acrobat design as recommended here.

All in all, it seems we are good now. Thank you for taking your time to help on this case:)

    Hi Amiable_Moonlight0c51,

Sounds good, thanks for letting us know. Take your time testing with your colleagues, and we'll be here when you're ready to report back on whether the update and/or disabling New Acrobat resolved it.

The fact that killing the Acrobat Licensing Service makes Acrobat work again is a pretty strong clue that the issue is with a background licensing process, not the PDF itself.

Since this is happening to multiple users, I’d check whether the Adobe/Creative Cloud apps and licensing endpoints are being blocked by security software, firewall, or network filtering. Adobe specifically lists licensing and network communication as possible causes of Acrobat issues.

If you can reproduce the freeze, I’d also create a process dump while Acrobat is frozen. Adobe has a current guide for collecting dumps from Task Manager, which could help identify what Acrobat is waiting on.

I’d avoid repeatedly reinstalling Acrobat for now since the behavior points more toward the licensing service or something interacting with it.

    Hi @Amiable_Moonlight0c51 ,

Thanks for the detail, especially pinpointing that killing the Acrobat Licensing Service process specifically is what unfreezes it, that's a genuinely useful clue.

A couple of things would help confirm which fix applies: what's your exact Acrobat version (Help > About Acrobat), and are you on Acrobat Pro/Standard or the free Reader? Also, did this start after a specific update, or has it been happening since you first installed it?

The first thing worth checking is whether you're on the latest version  26.002.21901 Planned update, Sep 08, 2026 go to Help > Check for updates and reboot the computer once.

If you're already up to date and still hitting this, a few things are worth trying in order:

    • Check the dedicated licensing/credential troubleshooting steps here. This addresses freezes tied specifically to the sign-in/licensing step on Windows: Fix licensing error 205

    • If you're on the newer Acrobat interface, try disabling it: click the hamburger menu (top-left) > Disable New Acrobat, then restart. This has resolved the exact same freeze-on-open symptom for a number of other users, even though it's not obviously related

    • Temporarily disable "Enable Protected Mode at startup" in Preferences > Security (Enhanced), as a diagnostic step, to see if that's what's stalling the sign-in screen specifically.
Note: Please turn on the security after testing to avoid any security risks.

Let us know your version and whether updating or disabling New Acrobat changes anything; that'll tell us which underlying cause this is.

    Regards
    Amal
