Acrobat: Highlighter makes a box around text instead of highlighting it

I downloaded a PDF version of an article from online and tried to highlight parts of it in Adobe Acrobat. However, instead of highlighting it, the highlighter just puts a box around the selected words (see image below). Does anyone know why this is and how to fix it?
