Question

Acrobat is extremely slow opening / viewing CAD pdf drawings.

As the title suggested, when opening some CAD drawings saved as PDF (not even heavy drawings), Acrobat just struggles enormously and this has gotten worse over the years, to the point where it's not even workable anymore. Opening, switching pages or zooming in takes a very long time.

I just downloaded Sumatra PDF, and I opened 20 CAD drawings in less than 2 seconds and the viewing experience is just on another level, it's blazing fast.

If the original developer of the PDF format doesn't know how to handle these basic PDFs whereas a free software does the job 1000x better and faster, there's clearly something wrong.

My workstation specs are quite ok: Threadripper 3990x, Nvidia RTX3080Ti and 265GB RAM so I don't think that's the problem.

Hi @Digital Twins,

Hope you are doing well. Sorry for the trouble, and the delayed response.

The team is aware of the issue, and working on a fix.

We released some stability and performance enhancements in the subsequent releases. Would you mind updating the app to the latest version (2024.005.20xxx) and letting us know if the experience bettered?

To do so, go to Menu-> Help-> Check for Updates.

Hi Souvik,

Thanks for getting back, the files are a bit faster to navigate, BUT the biggest issue is with the files I was mentioning (1 page / pdf each). These files had quite a lot of comments (+100). I finally found the option to disable comments opening automatically so that also made it faster, but there's another one opening, namely bookmarks, this also slows down. There should be an option to override PDF specific settings (like bookmarks opening), a file should never mess with someone's UI options. So yeah reason why Sumatra was so fast was because it wasn't opening the comments.

Thank you.

Hi @Digital Twins,

Hope you are doing well. Sorry for the delayed response.

The team has worked and made significant progress on the issue, and the rendering should have a positive impact.

Could you update the app to the latest version (2025.001.20577) and let us know if it helps?

To do so, go to Menu > Help > Check for Updates.

Also, I completely understand your concern related to the bookmark/comments panel auto-opening.

What I'd suggest here is to view the correct answer shared in the given link: https://adobe.ly/4m13OOX

The discussion has a universally acknowledged correct answer, which might be helpful for you too.

Let us know how it goes.

Regards,
Souvik.
