Acrobat Pro DC crashes every time we try to merge files including DOCX

IF we try to merge several documents into a single PDF - selecting PDF, XLSX and DOCX files - we get "unable to open the document"

we have verified that we can open and manipulate the file under Word 2016 - so permissions does not appear to be issue.

If we select just the PDF and XLSX as sources, the merge works.

Ran an application repair from Control Panel|Apps and tried again. same results.

Need assistance what should next step be?
