Acrobat Reader keeps opening “Save As” instead of saving with Ctrl + S – even after reinstalling

Hi everyone,

I'm experiencing a persistent issue with Adobe Acrobat Reader and hope someone here can help.

Software:

  • Adobe Acrobat Reader (64-bit)

  • Version 2026.002.21931 (Continuous Release)

  • Windows 11

The problem:

Every time I open an existing PDF, add a comment or highlight, and press Ctrl + S, Acrobat opens the “Save As” dialog instead of saving directly to the existing file.

I then have to select the save location and confirm that I want to overwrite the original PDF.

After doing this once, Ctrl + S works normally for as long as the document remains open.

However, as soon as I close and reopen the exact same PDF, the problem starts again.

What I've already tried:

  1. Tested PDFs stored in OneDrive and locally in Downloads.

  2. Created a completely new PDF using Microsoft Word.

  3. Confirmed that the files are not read-only and have no restrictions on commenting.

  4. Disabled “Show online storage when saving files” in Preferences → General.

  5. Checked the settings under Preferences → Documents.

  6. Reviewed the security settings without disabling security features.

  7. Repaired the Acrobat installation.

  8. Reset Acrobat's user preferences by renaming the folder in %appdata%\Adobe\Acrobat.

  9. Completely uninstalled and reinstalled Acrobat Reader.

  10. Tested both the new and classic Acrobat interfaces.

  11. Opened files both by double-clicking them in File Explorer and through “Open with → Adobe Acrobat”.

None of these steps resolved the issue.

Acrobat correctly recognises that the document has been modified, but it still requires “Save As” the first time I save after opening it.

What I want:

I simply want Ctrl + S to save changes directly to an existing PDF without asking me to choose a location or overwrite the file every time I reopen it.

Has anyone experienced the same issue? Is this a known bug, or is there a specific setting or fix I might have missed?

I would really appreciate any suggestions, especially since I've already spent a considerable amount of time troubleshooting this.

Thank you in advance!

    Hi @Exciting_Wishcf1a

I hope you are doing well, and thanks for the detailed update and for listing the steps you have already tried. I understand how disruptive it is to confirm an overwrite every time you reopen a PDF you have only commented on.

What you describe is the default behavior of Acrobat Reader application. The first save of a file opened in Reader shows the Save As dialog, and later saves of the same file do not while it stays open. This is controlled by Protected Mode, which helps prevent tampering when a PDF opens in Reader. For more details please check the help articles Work with PDFs and Protected View for PDFs.

If you would like to test this, go to PrCtrl,Cmd+K) > Security (Enhanced), clear “Enable Protected Mode at startup”, restart Reader, and try Ctrl + S again on a reopened PDF.
Note: Please turn on the secutity after testing to avoid security risks.

If Ctrl + S still opens Save As after this, could you please let us know, does it also happen with a PDF that was not created in Word?

Also try updating the application to the new version 26.002.22031 Planned update, Oct 14, 2026 from the help menu > Check for updates and reboot the computer once.

Let us know how it goes.

    Regards,
    Amal
