Acrobat scrolling suddenly skips several pages at once

All of a sudden, when I scroll down in a PDF, the reader skips pages. Single page skips 3, single page continuous, skips 2, two continuous skips 10… This happens both using the mouse and the bar.

What on earth is going on? Everything was fine a few days ago.

    Hi @Parasaurolophus

Hope you are doing well, and thanks for reaching out. We are sorry for the trouble you are experiencing.

Have you started experiencing this issue recently after an update, or was it occurring earlier as well? What is the version of the Acrobat Application and the OS you are using? Go to Help > About Acrobat and try updating the app to the latest version  26.001.21745 Planned update, Jul 23, 2026. Go to Help > check for update and reboot the computer once.

You may also try to repair the installation (Win only) from the Help Menu > Repair Installation and check.

Is this an issue with a particular PDF file or with all the PDFs? Please try with a different PDF file and check.

While you gather that, please try the step below and see if that helps

Override page layout via Accessibility Preferences (make it stick)

Go to  Preferences (ctrl,Cmd+k ) > Accessibility. Under "Override Page Display," check "Always use Page Layout Style" and choose Single Page Continuous or Two Page Continuous from the dropdown. Restart Acrobat after saving this and check if that works.

If it still doesn’t work, share a small video recording of the steps you are taking and the issue as it occurs for more clarity and further investigation.

This sounds more like an Acrobat page-display/scrolling bug or setting change than a problem with the PDF itself—especially since it happens with both the mouse and scrollbar and across all PDFs. Adobe has had similar scrolling issues in recent Acrobat builds. (Adobe)

    I'd try this first:

    1. Open Acrobat → Menu → Preferences (Ctrl+K on Windows).

    2. Go to Accessibility.

    3. Under Override Page Display, enable “Always use Page Layout Style.”

    4. Select Single Page Continuous.

    5. Click OK, completely close Acrobat, and reopen it.

This exact workaround has been recommended in Adobe's own community for the recent multi-page scrolling problem. (Adobe)

Also check View → Page Display → Enable Scrolling. If continuous scrolling is disabled, Acrobat can behave more like page-by-page navigation, and there have been reports of the scrollbar jumping by more than one page in that mode. (acrobat.uservoice.com)

If it started only recently, go to Help → Check for Updates as well. Adobe's current troubleshooting guidance for this particular report includes updating Acrobat, restarting it, and testing another PDF. (Adobe)

Since you've already said it happens with all PDFs, I'd put the Accessibility → Always use Page Layout Style → Single Page Continuous fix at the top of the list. 👍

Are you using Windows or macOS?

I have new information to add. The problem seems to be how quickly the scroll bar on the right detects a touch on a touch pad or a click with a mouse wheel. With a mouse wheel, a typical click starts to speed scroll (like if you press and hold below the scroll bar on the right and the pages speed down to where you’ve clicked). A quick click jumps 1 to 2 pages using a mouse. With a touch pad, a very quick tap jumps 2 to 3 pages. It seems the short delay between a one page jump and starting to speed scroll is gone, and it immediately begins to speed scroll without the typical momentary delay.

And this only happens in Adobe - my other programs the scroll bar functions just fine with one page (or half page) jumps. Adobe treats a click under or above the scroll bar the way a webpage or other program would treat a 1-2 second click and hold on the scroll bar.

I have this problem as well. When I click in the bar on the left of the page below or above the scroll bar, it will jump 3 or 4 pages, whereas in the past it would go to the next page if in full page view - or about half a page if in continuous - Essentially the way that every other application or web browser etc function. The page will jump 3 pages sometimes, and 4 pages others. Super annoying if I’m being honest.

That sounds frustrating. When a PDF reader suddenly starts skipping pages while scrolling, the issue is often caused by a recent software update, a mouse scroll sensitivity setting, touchpad gesture settings, hardware acceleration, or a temporary glitch in the PDF viewer. Try restarting the application, updating or reinstalling the PDF reader, disabling hardware acceleration (if available), checking your mouse or touchpad scroll settings, and testing the same PDF in a different reader to determine whether the problem is with the software or the file itself.

I didn’t notice an update, but yes, the problem is a few days old; I use Acrobat every day, and the problem only just manifested. I have tried repairing the installation, too. The version is 2026.001.21745.0.

I don’t think it’s a matter of making the continuous layout stick, since it remains enabled every time I open my preferences to check. (Indeed, this is what I’ve been doing, assuming it was the issue, but it just doesn’t resolve it.)

It’s an issue with all PDFs.

Update: it was still doing it when I posted the above reply. It has now mysteriously stopped (as of a minute ago) for mouse scrolling (thank goodness), but persists when I use the scroll bar.
