Question

Acrobat taking too long to open files

I am using the 64-bit version of Abode Acrobat Standard. My subscription was recently changed by my workplace from the professional version, so I believe the version I am running should be fully up to date.

When I open files, regardless of whether they are opened directly in Acrobat, or opened by double-clicking in file explorer, it will sometimes take upwards of 30 seconds to a minute to open the file. There is no consistency between large or small files, recently opened or first time opening, nothing. It could take 30 seconds to open a single-page, 100 KB file that I just had opened the day before, but then open a 100-page, 3 MB, freshly downloaded file immediately.

All of my searching for solutions online have come up with nothing. This is a recent issue, starting within the past couple of months.

This sounds like its related to the issue we are having, however for us its usually if you open a second PDF with one already open. Made a post and submitted logs for testing and haven't heard anything back. Many other posts with this issue. These are the fixes we have tried, none of which have helped:

We have tried the following to try fix the issue:

  • Disable Protected mode at startup and enhanced security.
  • Untick "Show online storage when opening files"
  • Disabled new acrobat
  • Made sure up to date
  • Reinstalled
  • Disabled Gen AI through registry
  • Disabled page cache
  • Ran with Antivirus turned off to see if that was interfering
  • Tried running in compatibility mode

Would like to know if this has been recognised as a known issue becuase its incredibly frustrating.

Hi @sam_0177  and @kirstin_9793,

Sorry for the inconvenience caused to you folks, can you suggest some time so that we can  jump on a MS Teams call, to fix this issue for you folks and in the process we might need your assistance with some logs

Thanks

Hi there

Hope you are doing well, and thanks for reaching out.

I understand how frustrating slow file openings can be, especially when there's no clear pattern. Please try some troubleshooting steps below and see if that works for you:

1. What is the version of the Adobe Acrobat you are using? Go to Help > About Adobe Acrobat and ensure it's updated to the latest version, 24.05.2039X. Go to Help > Check for updates and reboot the computer once for the changes to take effect.

2. Please try to repair the installation (Win Only) from the Help menu > Repair Installation and reboot the computer once.

3. You may also try turning off the protected mode (for testing only). Go to Preferences (Ctrl,Cmd+K) > Enhanced Security > Uncheck 'Enable protected mode at startup,' turn off the protected mode, and reboot the computer.

Note: Please turn on the security settings to avoid any security issues.

Let us know how it goes.

Hi Amal, thank you for the speedy reply. Unfortunately though, none of those options made any difference. It would work fine for a while during testing, but then a random file would cause a slowdown. I had actually already turned off the 'protected mode at startup' as it had been one of the suggestions on a previous forum post with a similar issue.

I know it's not my computer, as my computer can run both Solidworks and AutoCAD at the same time without any slowdowns, and I was testing without either of those programs open.
