Acrobat 2025

    Hello @Enchanted_Companion0882

I hope you are doing well, and thank you for reaching out.

In addition to what our community product expert has shared, when Font Options are set to “Let Acrobat choose”, Acrobat 2025 does not guarantee a specific Japanese fallback font (such as Kozuka Gothic or Kozuka Mincho). The final font is selected dynamically based on the document, system, and available fonts. To ensure deterministic behavior, fonts must be explicitly specified in Preferences.

In Acrobat 2025 (latest desktop UI), when the following settings are left as “Let Acrobat choose” under Menu> Preferences > Content Editing > Font Options, the behavior is defined as follows.

Fallback Font for Editing Existing Text:

    • When editing existing text and the original font is not available on the system, Acrobat automatically substitutes a fallback font appropriate for the script (writing system) of the text.
    • The actual font selected depends on:
      • The fonts referenced or embedded in the PDF
      • The operating system
      • Fonts installed and available on the system

For Japanese text, Kozuka Gothic / Kozuka Mincho are commonly used when available, but Adobe does not document or guarantee that these fonts will always be selected when the option is set to automatic.

There is no published rule or priority list that states which Japanese font is definitively chosen under “Let Acrobat choose.”

    Default Font When Adding Text:

When adding new text with “Let Acrobat choose” selected:

    • Acrobat attempts to inherit font attributes from nearby existing text whenever possible.
    • If no suitable font can be inherited, Acrobat again automatically selects a default font appropriate for the script, based on the system and available fonts.

As with editing, Adobe does not document a specific fixed font name for Japanese text in this automatic mode.

    I hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Anand Sri.

@Enchanted_Companion0882 I believe Acrobat picks a font that best matches the document's existing metadata, the user's OS settings, and the available system resources. On your computer, do you have it set to Japanese, sans serif fonts — "Kozuka Gothic Pr6N" and serif fonts — "Kozuka Mincho Pr6N". If Kozuka is unavailable, it uses the OS default (e.g., MS Mincho/Gothic on Windows or Hiragino on macOS
