Question

Action Wizard auto-rename PDF files based on content

Hi,

I have been looking for an option on how to automatically rename a PDF file after it being split. The renaming should be based on each specific PDF files content.

After having googled around I stumbled upon something called Action Wizard, where people have had an option "Auto-rename" under the "More" tool. However, I cannot find this tool within my package. I tried to find and download it here: https://acrobatusers.com/actions-exchange/?trackingid=JZXYQ but I cannot find it.

Is it possible to use the Action Wizard Auto-rename program to help me with my split PDF files, and how do I download it?

To answer the original question directly: "Auto-Rename" is not part of Acrobat, which is why you can't find it in your package or on the Actions Exchange. It comes from Evermap's AutoSplit plug-in (the one linked above). Once the plug-in is installed, it adds "Plug-ins > Auto-Rename PDF Files…" to Acrobat, and that command can then be run from the Action Wizard. The people you saw using it had the plug-in.

So your options are:

1. Stay in Acrobat: buy the AutoSplit plug-in. It can split and name the files from text on the page in one go. It is a paid plug-in (from $99 according to their site), Windows only, and needs Acrobat Standard or Pro.

2. Stay in Acrobat without a plug-in: a custom JavaScript, as try67 says. It will save renamed copies rather than rename in place, which you said is fine.

3. Outside Acrobat: PDFsam Visual has a "split by text" mode where you select the area holding the name or number; it starts a new file each time that text changes and can use the text as the file name. If you are comfortable with scripts, about 15 lines of Python with pypdf do the same.

One thing to check first, whatever you choose: the text you want in the file name has to be real text (you can select it with the mouse). If the PDF is a scan, you need OCR before any of this works.

Disclosure: I'm building a small browser tool for exactly this (drop the PDF, draw a box around the name once, download a ZIP of named files, nothing is uploaded). It isn't live yet, but the description is here if it helps you or others landing on this thread: https://splitandname.vercel.app/?utm_source=adobe

Try [Wildcard Batch File Renamer] available in Windows Store.

This has some of the abilities you are looking for and much more.

Good luck

You can use this third party plugin: https://evermap.com/AutoSplit.asp

The Action Wizard in Acrobat can't rename files. It can only save them under a new name, leaving the original file in place.

That is completely fine. I would easily be able to mass delete all of the original files, as long as the copies stay
