adobe acrobat cannot open file because it is either not a supported file or because the file damaged

I am receiving the same error message on my PC when I try to open pdfs or zip files sent to me.  These are from multiple sources and so they can’t all be incorrectly decoded, as the message states.  However, I can open the same files on my laptop.  Please explain.
