Question

Adobe Acrobat DC Frequent Crashing

Hello,

I use Adobe Acrobat DC daily to view and edit PDFs. These PDFs are typically architectural drawings in excess of 50 mb in size, and consisting of several large (36 in. x 44 in.) sheets. In the past, such drawings have not been an issue for the program, but this past week I have been dealing with abysmally slow loading times and frequent "out of memory" errors from Acrobat DC, in addition to the message "a drawing error occurred" followed by a complete application crash. Other applications on my PC run just fine. How can I improve Adobe Acrobat DC's functionality and avoid such errors?

Thanks!

Hi there

Hope you are doing well and sorry for the trouble. As described you are experiencing, slow loading times and frequent "out of memory" errors from Acrobat DC, in addition to the message "a drawing error occurred" followed by a complete application crash.

This error often occurs when there is a problem with the PDF file itself and Reader or Acrobat is unable to render the PDF properly. You can also open or check the PDF with other applications to see if you get any error messages.

Would you mind sharing the steps and the application you are using to create the PDF files? If you are using a third-party application or plug-in to generate the PDF file, then make sure that you have the latest version.and try to regenerate the PDF file and check.

Also, please try to turn off the protected mode (Windows Only) Go to Edit > Preferences > Enhanced Security > Uncheck 'Enable protected mode at start up' Turn off the protected mode and Uncheck Enhanced Security > Click OK and reboot the computer once.

Note: Please turn on the security after testing to avoid security risks.

You may also look at the steps provided in the help page https://helpx.adobe.com/in/acrobat/kb/error-drawing-error-occurred-acrobat.html

Hi Amal,

Thank you for taking the time to reply. That is interesting to know it is a problem with the PDF itself, and that is consistent with my experience - many PDFs are working fine, but a few take incredibly long to load and produce the aforementioned errors. I don't believe that I have had an error with a PDF that I have generated myself - mostly the errors come from PDFs that others send to me. Given that they are architectural, I would guess that they are generated using Autodesks's AutoCAD or Revit programs.

I realize this is an Adobe forum, so perhaps it is not best to ask this here, but is there another application you might recommend I use to confirm that the errors are tied to the PDF and not my Acrobat DC installation? I see Photoshop mentioned on the link you provided, but regrettably I do not have access to that software.

Additionally, the link you provided suggests "regenerating" the PDF file - I imagine there is no option to do this if it was not created by me, correct? Is there a way to "clean up" a PDF to remove potentially error-inducing content?

Thank you so much!

Hi there

Thanks for sharing more information. As mentioned its a file specific issue, there isn't much that we can do. You may ask the users to create the PDF using Adobe Acrobat DC.

You may also try to open the PDF in a web browser and print to Adobe PDF (It will recreate the PDF) and save it with new name then try to open it with Adobe Acrobat DC and check if that works for you.
