I newly installed Adobe Acrobat Pro DC  and is SOMETIMES produices a printer error, but my old Adobe Acrobat X Standard does not. Grateful to know if this is a bug in the new software or if a workaround possible  - here are details:

1) I created a pdf with my scanner and

2) I can see it in Adobe Acrobat Pro DC, but

3) when I print it on my HP Laser Jet prints a sheet with a message

subsystem: IMAGE

Error: IllegalAttributeValue

Operator: ReadImage

Position: 19

It does not print the pdf.

4) I can open the same document in Adobe Acrobat X Standard and it prints just fine.

Specs I have:

Printer Model: HP 4050TN

Printer Driver: upd-pcl6-x64-6.8.0.24296

OS: Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

Thank you for any advice so that I can use my new software...

Jonathan

I cannot print!  Error message displays and the printout says "subsystem: IMAGE Error: IllegalAttributeValue Operator: ReadImage".  Everything is up to date and installed correctly, I am not very savvy with such things.  😞

In which operating system  is this occuring and which version of Adobe Acrobat Pro DC are you using?

Is this happening with every and any  other file types in addition to PDFS or just the one PDF you're trying to print?

Hi Jonathan

We are sorry for the trouble. As described, you are getting the error 'IllegalAttributeValue' while printing the file from Adobe Acrobat DC.

What is the version of the Adobe Acrobat DC installed? To check the version of the application please use the help article - https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/identify-product-version.html
Make sure you have the latest version 19.21.20061. Go to Help > Check for Updates

Please try to print the file as an image and check. Open the PDF file > Go to Print > Advanced > Print as image.

You may also try exporting the file as JPEG and see if that works for you. Open the PDF file > Tools > Export PDF > Image > JPEG > Export .

Also, please check for any updates for the printer drivers and firmware and try updating them.

Let us know how it goes.

Regards

Amal

Hi Amal - -thanks for your guidance. To respond:

have the latest version 19.21.20061.

I can print as an image file. I cannot print the same document as a normal pdf print job.

My print apparently is a PCL 5 HP printer and my technician thinks there is no firmware upgrade to PCL 6 which Windows 10 uses for Adobe Acrobat. Are aware of a firmware upgrade for the HP 4050TN ? It is a great printer but my technician says the only alternative is to junk it and buy a whole new laserjet printer.

Do you have any other solution?

That said, many other pdfs DO print normally. Just some don't.

thanks

Hi,

Please review and try all of the recommended  printer troubleshooting steps from Microsoft support:

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-hardware/pcl-xl-error-subsystem-image-error/1bce22ed-6181-4ce3-b987-96ef16b45f93

Here is similar guidance to Amal recommendations from HP support community:

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/LaserJet-Printing/HP-3030-PCL-XL-Error-IllegalAttributeValue/td-p/5806320

Last, if you look at this other guidance:https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c01796879  you will notice that Windows 10 may be assigning its own built-in printer drivers.

For troubleshooting purposes you may need to disable this.

When you go to the HP support website: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-laserjet-4000-printer-series/25474  the HP website will list the original HP printer driver for that model that was meant for old windows version back in 2003. Bear in mind that HP no longer supports the All-in-One HP software  since 2009.

This means you're only left with the driver to perform troubleshooting.

You can try three additionsl suggestions that I can think of:

  • download and  install the postscript driver, which should resolve your issue immediately after installing it
  • Or, in the same download page, download all drivers, software and utility. Uninstall what you have in Windows 10 for that printer and reinstall thre downloaded files using the Windows 10 Program Compatibility Troubleshooter;  select and older version of windows to rollback the driver support for those programs in your Windows 10.
  • Last, in the same download link page there is another link that says "Choose a different OS". Click on it and select to download the drivers for Windows Server 2003 which is a more recent version than that of MS Windows XP or NT.  Download the HP LaserJet 4000 PCL 6 printer driver  from the available choices. Manually force the installation of this driver in Windows 10 to see if this is a viable workaround.
