Adobe Acrobat Pro DC will not read PDF aloud

In trying to have my computer read a PDF aloud to me, I found that the reader will simply say "Warning: Empty Page" for each page.  This was not a scanned document but a born-digital document downloaded off of the internet (an online university course). I do note that there are multiple text boxes in the PDF, but it is not an uncommon document.  It is in the same format as most academic articles and essays.  Are the text boxes the issue, or what is the reason?  Should I convert it to MS Word?  I would prefer to just leave it as a PDF document.

I have seen the post about Read Aloud not working for others, but that was for Adobe Reader, and the solution was to get Adobe Acrobat Pro DC, which I am currently using.
