Adobe Freezing Issue

I am working with couple of PDF files—approximately 7,000 pages and 25,000 pages. There are no additional plug-ins installed.

However, Acrobat takes an unusually long time—or appears to freeze—when performing even basic actions such as:

Saving the PDF
Using Save As
Adding a symbol/text annotation
Deleting a single page
In many cases, the application becomes unresponsive for an extended period, making it difficult to determine whether it is still processing or has hung completely.

Could someone please advise whether there are any Acrobat preferences, settings, cache options, performance configurations, or recommended workflows that should be enabled for handling PDFs of this size? At minimum, I would expect basic editing and saving functions to work reliably.

    Hi rajib_7757,

    Thank you for reaching out.

Sorry to hear you're experiencing this. Working with PDF files containing 7,000 to 25,000 pages can place a significant load, especially when performing operations that require rewriting, re-indexing, or validating large portions of the document. Even actions that appear simple, such as saving, deleting a page, or adding annotations, may take considerably longer on very large PDFs.

Please try the following troubleshooting steps:

    1. Ensure that Acrobat is updated to the latest version:

    • Go to Menu > Help > Check for Updates.

    1. Try to repair the application installation:

    • Go to Menu > Help > Repair Installation

    • Restart the computer after updating or repairing Acrobat.

    1. Please check and confirm whether the issue occurs with all large PDFs or only specific files.

    1. If possible, save a local copy of the PDF and work from a local drive rather than a network location, cloud-synced folder, or external drive.

    1. Consider splitting extremely large PDFs into smaller sections when making extensive edits, then combining them again afterwards.

    1. Use File > Save As occasionally to create a fresh copy and remove incremental changes that can accumulate over time.

    1. If the PDF contains thousands of annotations, bookmarks, form fields, or complex graphics, performance may be affected further.

If the application freezes, please try the troubleshooting steps in the following help document: Acrobat is not responding.

Let us know if that helps.

    Thanks,

    Meenakshi
