Question

Adobe not working - not even opening files

I have been having difficulties with Adobe for a while. I have a paid subscription enabling me to export pdf files to docx. (renewed in June) For a few months (even before I renewed) the conversion feature has not been available from within documents, only if I go to my account. Instead it offers me the opportunity to take out a subscription (which I already have). It has gotten worse and worse. Now I cannot even open pdf documents from my file explorer - I am getting the message “Something went wrong” “A running instance of Acrobat has caused an error”. I have important work to do with a strict deadline and need to open and print files and convert some to word.

How can I fix this mess?

    Hi @Deanne24830024x700

Hope you're doing well and thanks for reaching out. We are sorry for the trouble you are experiencing.

Before we dive into the fix, a few quick questions to help us narrow this down:

    • Are you using Adobe Acrobat (the full paid app) or Acrobat Reader (the free viewer), and what is the version of the application? Go to Help > About Acrobat

    • What version of Windows are you on (Windows 10 or 11)?

    • Are the PDF files stored locally on your hard drive, or on a network drive / OneDrive / SharePoint

    • Did this start happening after a Windows or Acrobat update?

Please try the steps below and see if that works:

Step 1: Kill all background Acrobat processes

This is the most common cause. Acrobat is stuck running silently in the background, and when you try to open a new file, it conflicts with itself.

    1. Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete and open Task Manager

    2. Look under both the "Apps" and "Background processes" sections for anything named Adobe Acrobat

    3. Right-click each one and choose End Task

    4. Once cleared, try opening your PDF again

For more information, please check the official guide on this: Acrobat not responding and running instance error — Adobe Help

Step 2 : Check for and install available updates

This error has been associated with specific versions of Acrobat, so checking for updates and installing any available update is the most effective early step. Please check the correct answer here: Adobe Support Community

    1. Open Acrobat (if it opens at all) and go to Menu (☰) > Help > Check for Updates

    2. Install any available updates and restart your machine

    3. If Acrobat won't open, you can update manually using the patch file here https://adobe.ly/4fvrKK4

Step 3: Repair your Acrobat installation

A corrupted installation can cause exactly this behavior. To repair Acrobat, open it, click Menu in the upper right corner, hover over Help, and click Repair Installation. Acrobat will repair itself and restart once the process is finished.

If Acrobat won't open at all, you can repair it through Windows:

    1. Go to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features

    2. Find Adobe Acrobat in the list

    3. Right-click it and choose Change/Repair

Step 4: Disable Protected Mode temporarily (Testing Only)

Your security settings may be causing the issue. Try disabling Protected Mode and Enhanced Security; these features sometimes block file operations and can trigger the error.

    1. If Acrobat opens, go to Preferences (Ctrl,Cmd+K) > Security (Enhanced)

    2. Uncheck Enable Protected Mode at startup

    3. Restart Acrobat and try opening a file

Note: Please re-enable this after testing. Check Full guidance here: Protected View and Protected Mode — Adobe Help

Step 5: For the Export PDF issue (conversion not showing inside the document)

This is a separate but related problem you've been experiencing for months. When you sign in to Acrobat online with your Adobe ID, your Export PDF subscription lets you use the conversion tools. The fact that it's prompting you to subscribe even though you have an active plan usually means Acrobat isn't recognizing your sign-in. Try this:

    1. In Acrobat, go to Help > Sign Out, then sign back in with the Adobe ID tied to your subscription

    2. Then go to Tools > Export PDF  it should now reflect your plan

    3. You can also always use the web version as a backup: https://adobe.ly/4ccHS0H  sign in and use Export PDF from there directly, and check if that helps

For more information, check: Export PDF from Acrobat Reader — Adobe Help

In the meantime, to meet your deadline today:

Since your deadline is urgent, try to:

    • Open PDFs in your browser (Chrome, Edge, or Firefox can all open PDFs natively, just drag and drop the file in)

    • For the Word conversion, use https://adobe.ly/4ccHS0H, directly sign in with your Adobe ID, and use the Export PDF tool from the web interface

Please let us know how it goes.
