Adobe Reader Passthrough feature not working in Reader/Acrobat 2024.005.20392

Hello,
I am in an entrprise environment where all of our users have Adobe Acrobat Reader, and a smaller subset of users have Adobe Acrobat Standard/Pro. We have in-house and third-party applications that require us to keep Reader installed for all users, and also keep the file association for PDF set to Reader for all users (including Acrobat users).

For a good while, Reader has had a passthrough feature that automatically opens PDFs in Acrobat when a user has both applications, regardless of what app is set as the default in Windows. This setting is called "Always open PDFs in Adobe Acrobat", and it is in the General>Application Startup section of Reader's preferences. This keeps users happy, because they can open PDFs directly in Acrobat, while all of our backend integrations still leverage Adobe Reader.

We have received many reports at our organization that this feature is no longer working. I am also able to reproduce the issue on a test machine. Based on the start of the reports, I believe this may have coincided with the most recent Reader/Acrobat update to 2024.005.20392.

Although I could not find any Adobe documentation for managing this feature, I have confirmed that this setting corresponds to HKCU:\\Software\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\DC\AVGeneral \ bEnableReaderPassThrough. I have confirmed that the issue occurs when this is set to "1" which should enable the feature.

The last time this occurred in our environment, it was due to a mismatch of the version of Reader we had deployed vs Acrobat. This is not the case this time, as we have both programs deployed as the same version.

I will look for a workaround, but I wanted to report the issue for visibility. I am not sure how common this use case is.

Thanks!
Andrew

Hello,
It looks like Reader/Acrobat version 2024.005.20399 was released towards the end of last week. We deployed these updates over the weekend, but the issue is still present in this new version.
Thanks!
