Dear community, I am having a serious problem with adobe pro dc for a while now and I am about to loose my job because I still could not solve the problem. I contacten adobe team over and over aganin and had many chats with more tha 10 emplyees and even with their supervisors and still noone could solve it while It looks easy to solve. I explan the problem : I am a translator and must translate this page to another language (see attachment). The problem is that when I open this page and I try to edit it to replace the dutch text with english text the picture of the fridge just changes from sharp to not sharp at all.

Can you please tell me if this has something to do with my settings ? as I see that the picture changes as I start to change the text. Maybe this has something to do with text recognizing ? I hope somebody smart kan help me solve this issue as Adobe 's team failed here many times.

Thank you so much !

Regards

Yasmine

Dear Luke, thank you so much for this explanation but it is not necessary anymore as I already found the solution (3 days ago) 😉 The only thing I had to do is to go to the settings and uncheck the box "Recognize text" and uncheck the box "Show bounding boxes" which were both already selected as standard by the Adobe version I have. I then selected the source text with the rectangular selection tool to delete it and could easily type my translation using "add text". The drawings were still very sharp as the source. I am very happy that I could finally solve the problem myself 😉 Sometimes, problems seem to be difficult to solve when the solution is just simpel and in front of us :). But anyway thanks again for having tried to help me out 😉

What is your Acrobat Pro version?

I can edit this PDF and change texts to French without seeing any change in the image of the fridge.

Anyway, since it's a vector image if it appears blurry it is necessarily due to a display artifact, it is not due to the image itself.

Dear JR, I already solved the problem. Please read my replies to the persons above.

I will see how to close the topic.

But thank you anyway 😉

As you will well know, translators are often provided with difficult or unsuitable materials to translate. You should know that PDF is generally a very difficult and bad choice for translation. But this is an exceptionally bad and difficult item to translate because it contains no text at all. The "text" you see is a series of line drawings. Hence text recognition would have to be used for editing, and it will mess up the drawing because it will try to recognise text.

If you have any choice in the matter I would say: bounce it back. Say there is no editable text and ask for the original material, or say you can send back translated captions for the original designer to use. If you have no choice at all, I suggest you

1. Prepare your captions.

2. Use redaction with white to delete all the existing captions.

3. Place the page in InDesign.

4. Add the captions.

5. Save as a new PDF.

You might find a way to add text in Acrobat that does NOT use the edit tool, but beware: some of these ways make text that some users will not see.

It looks like using OCR in Acrobat will convert vector to raster at a maximum of 600 dpi as part of the OCR process, which is too low for this type of illustration. Keep the illustration as vector.

That said, I will attempt to elaborate what has already (accurately) been said. You would be better off starting with the original file that has live, editable text (Word, InDesign, etc.) For this particular page, here is how I would do it:

Open the PDF in Illustrator, create a new layer called "english", select and move the english copy to the new layer, color it red, save as an Illustrator PDF, using the Illustrator default settings. It would also be a good idea to change the entire illustration to black only, except for the red type.

Place the new PDF into an InDesign page, create a new InDesign layer named "french" and set the new french type on top of the existing (red) copy.

Select the placed PDF and go to Object> Object Layer Options, turn off the english layer*.

Export to a new PDF.

*alternately, you could place the PDF into an InDesign layer named "english" and use Object Layer Options to turn off all but the english (red) layer, and also place it into a separate layer with the english layer turned off, this will allow you to toggle the english layer on and off quickly.

If all 25 pages are like this one, and they can't supply anything better, this method may be your best option.
