Question

After the new update, alt symbols using my numpad no longer work when I make comments (my primary function with the program). Is anyone else having this issue, and if so, have you found any solutions?

I am an editor and make suggestions by using the commenting features. I often use special symbols in my suggestions (en- and em-dashes, accented alpha characters, etc.), so alt codes are crucial to my  workflow. After the new Acrobat update, alt codes no longer work in my comments. I have turned num lock off and on, restarted the program, and restarted my system, to no avail. My alt codes still work for all other programs on my device; the issue seems to be only with Acrobat. I’ve recently had to reinstall the program after the update for a different reason (constant crashing any time I tried to scroll down a page).

    Thanks for the reply!

Action update: I reinstalled Acrobat again after the program began crashing again (with the same scrolling issue I mentioned in the original post) along with the failed alt codes. The program is now working again, including the alt codes, but given that my initial reinstall apparently only fixed the crashing problem temporarily, I think it’s worthwhile to keep investigating in case this second reinstall isn’t a permanent fix, either.

    I’m working with Acrobat 26.1 on Windows 11 10.0.26200.

The alt codes failed in all the commenting features that I tried (sticky note, replace text, text box).

I didn’t try using alt codes on a blank document before the reinstall. I did, however, open a few other non-blank documents before the crash and second reinstall, and the alt codes failed in each of them.

If the problems reoccur, I’ll be sure to take videos of my steps, including testing the alt codes with a new, blank document.

    Hi @Elizabeth28390456miva

I hope you are doing well, and thanks for the detailed write-up, that's helpful context, especially that alt codes still work fine outside Acrobat.

A few things that would help pin this down:

What's the exact Acrobat version/build and the OS you're on now after the reinstall (Help > About Acrobat)?

Which specific comment tool are you using when this happens, sticky note, text box, or the "Add text comment" (typewriter) tool? It would help to know if it fails in all of them or just one.

Does the same thing happen in a brand new, blank PDF, or only in the specific files you were editing before the reinstall?

Have you tried toggling Num Lock while the cursor is actively inside the comment text field itself, rather than before opening it? Some apps re-check Num Lock state per text field focus.

Also worth asking since it may be related: is the scrolling crash you mentioned still happening after the reinstall, or did that get resolved?

Please share a small video recording of the steps you are taking and the issue as it occurs for more clarity and further investigation.

We're here to help, just need a bit more info to track this down properly.

    Regards,
    Amal

Action update 2: After my (second) Acrobat reinstall earlier today, the issue has already reoccurred. I tested both a filled and a blank document, and both show the scrolling and alt code issues. Also, the blank document test showed another intermittent problem: elided keystrokes. I restarted my device before each test. I’m including a videograb of each test; please let me know if there is any more information I can provide to help troubleshoot.

I have editing deadlines to meet, so I plan to uninstall and reinstall Acrobat again and take advantage of the hourslong window I have before the program starts crashing again, but this interrupted workflow isn’t sustainable.

    Thanks!

Thanks for sharing the videos, thats very helpful also would you mind sharing the Acrobat diagnostic logs as described here https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/acrobat-diagnostics.html so we can present the case to our development team for further review.
